LUUHC Newsletter 25/02/08

Hello there all and welcome to your penultimate newsletter from me as your club secretary!

Just a couple of things to cover this week, as well as a message from your wonderful social sec to pass on. Hope everyone had fun on the Otley Run, I certainly did when I eventually joined you and I managed to eat a burger in my sleep so I was pretty impressed!

This Wednesday we will have the sign-up for a Sunday hike to the Lake District to Ambleside, which means not only lovely cafes and gear shops but gorgeous fells as well! There’s only 24 spaces so sign-up fast! As always we will be in the student resource lounge between 11.45 and 12.15, so see you then!

Just to be clear, the bus on Sunday will be leaving Leeds at 7.30 am and returning at around 6.30 pm and we will hopefully all go for a curry.

Finally, next Wednesday is the A.G.M which is going to be at 7.45 pm in the Conference Room in the A.R.C. (upstairs in the union). So for anyone thinking of standing get your speeches ready! And as I’ve said in the past feel free to ask any of the current committee for any hints or advice.

Just before I hand the rest of this email over to Amy, I will be sending out a very important email in the next couple of days so please keep an eye out for this in you inbox. In anyone knows of anyone who is a club member and still not receiving the newsletter (something to do with the uni email system I’m afraid and we can’t seem to fix) please pass that email on.

Over to Amy now, see you all on Wednesday for a night of amazing dancing!

Kate

Hey guys, for those of you who have seen this on face book and the forum sorry to be pestering you yet again.

But for those of you who don’t already know I’m getting club hoodies made.  They will be bottle green with the club logo embroidered on the front.  They will probably cost around £20 (this depends on the number we order etc) so if possible can you reply by Friday morning so I can decide a set price.

If you want one can you either get on our chat forum and post in the topic titled Hoodies in the old bar (follow links from the website home page (www.leedshike.co.uk), send me a facebook message or email social@ leedshike.co.uk.  If you are doing it by email make the subject hikesoc hoodies so it doesn’t get lost in all the spam I receive.

I need to know what your size is (S, M, L, XL or XXL) and whether or not you want it personalised (i.e. with your name and or year)

S    = 35"-37"  = women’s 10
M    =38"-40"  = women’s 12
L     =41"-43"  = women’s 14
XL   =44"-46"  = women’s 16
XXL=47"-49"  = women’s 18

The very nice man is going to send samples of each size to me free in the post today so will bring them to this weeks sign up if they arrive in time or if not next weeks sign up and the A.G.M. which will be your last chance to order one.

Also if anyone is interested some of us are thinking of going to see the 5 20 showing of There will blood pre social at the Light. If you want to come along we will be meeting from 5 05 near the ticket desk so people have time to buy their tickets (there’s always a long queue on a Wednesday)

Hope to see you on the social on Wednesday 8 30 in the Vic as usual, after the pub we will hopefully going to Hi-fi (it’s motown night on a Wednesday)

Amy

LUUHC Newsletter 19/02/08

Hello all!

Sorry about this coming out this morning but those of us who went to Scotland only got back late last night. Hope you all had a good weekend, we certainly did!

Firstly this week we have sign-up tomorrow (Wednesday) between 11.45 and 12.15 in the student resource lounge in the ARC. This is for Sundays hike to the Howgill Fells; we will be leaving at 7.30 on Sunday morning as it’s a bit further to go and hopefully returning to Leeds for a curry at about 6.30.

Secondly, can anyone who wants to enter the photo competition please send your entries to Abby (webmaster@leedshike.co.uk), put them on disc in the pigeon hole or bring them to the social BY THE END OF TOMORROW. The photos don’t need to be a work of photographic genius but just one that you took and particularly liked. Once again the categories at Sunday/Weekend Trip, Social Event (this can include any pictures from the evenings of weekend trips) and Winter Trips. We always have good prizes so it’s worth just entering and seeing what happens! The winners will be announced at the AGM next Wednesday (5th March), which if you remember is in the Conference Room in the ARC at 7.45, for any of you who fancy standing for a committee position get those speeches ready (not nearly as scary as it sounds).

Finally, it’s this terms Otley Run on Friday (22nd Feb). We will be in Woodies at 5.30 then moving on down the Otley Road as the evening progresses so feel free to join us at any point! The theme is your initials, so if your initials were “H.M” you could be a Huge Monster or the Honey Monster, the only limit is your imagination! We will be in the Vic tomorrow as usual from 8.30 and possibly heading on somewhere after so just pop down and see.

See you all soon!

Kate

LUUHC Newsletter 11/02/08

Heya,

Hope everyone has had a good term so far and the work isn’t getting to you all! Hopefully this will bring news of a few things to break up to boredom!

Firstly, we’re off on the second winter trip to Fort William on Friday. Bus leaving times will be 3pm and 5pm. Can those of you with a place on the trip please email me or post on the forum (I will start a thread) with your preferred leaving time. Although this really only applies if you need to be on the later bus. You’re leaving time will be emailed to you on Thursday as well as being put up on the forum. Can I remind anyone who hasn’t paid that Andy is on the warpath so we need your money as soon as possible, preferably in our pigeon-hole in the student resource lounge BEFORE Wednesday, cheques payable to LUU as usual.

The next Sunday trip will be to the Howgills and sign-up for this will be Wednesday 20th February in the student resource lounge between 11.45 and 12.15 as usual.

But before that it’s the event you’ve all been waiting for…

This terms OTLEY RUN! Our “cult movie” themed run the autumn term was such a success (and no I STILL have no idea how a pint glass was stuck to someone’s head – must’ve been magic!) we’ve decided to have another one on Friday 22nd February. We will be starting at 5 pm in Woodies then moving on down the Otley Road and this terms theme is your initials…

So for example mine are “KL” so I could be coming as King Lear or a Killer Lobster! Who knows!

I’m also going to remind you yet again about the AGM. It will be at 7.45 on the 5th March. Anyone who wants to stand for a committee position or just come along and have a say in who takes over next year should come along. Don’t worry about standing if you feel you haven’t really been around so far this year – some of the currently committee only met at last years meeting!

We will also have our yearly photo competition at the AGM. Closing date for entries is the 20th March so Abby has a chance to put them up on the website so you can have your vote. The categories are Sunday/Weekend Trip, Social Event and Winter Trip. Each section has an amazing prize so get searching through those photos and email them to Abby at webmaster@leedshike.co.uk or put them into our pigeonhole on a disc. Each entry should have your name and a “caption” or title for the photograph. Winners will be announced at the AGM.

Finally, we will of course be having our usual Wednesday social at the Vic from 8.30 so head on down. I hear last weeks visit to FAB after the pub closed was good fun so who knows where we’ll end up this week!

See you all soon!

Kate

Fwd: Hiking & Backpacking Newsletter from BellaOnline.com

Greetings,

Winter's here -- with a vengeance. It takes us almost longer to get
bundled up to head out for our after dinner walk than it does to
complete the route! Wind chills have brought temperatures down to
minus 46 Celcius. At that point I don't think there's much difference
between Celcius and Fahrenheit! Still we're not letting the weather
keep us indoors -- and that's the topic of the latest article from the
Hiking & Backpacking site at BellaOnline.com.

Fwd: Popular Trips from The World Outdoors

Hi Hiking,

Peru Machu Picchu Tour

With Machu Picchu being named recently as one of the Seven Man-Made
Wonders of the World, our Peru Tour is more popular than ever. We
operated every departure in 2007 but still had to turn away dozens of
requests due to the fact that the Inca Trail quota was often filled
months in advance.

The Inca Trail, the hiking route to Machu Picchu, has a daily
limitation of 500 people. About 75% of these spots are consumed by
guides, porters and cooks so only about 125 tourists are allowed to
enter the trail each day.

Permits for 2008 began to be issued just two weeks ago and already
some dates in the Spring are sold out. So if this trip-of-a-lifetime
is on your wishlist for 2008, you need to act soon.

I did this epic tour in October 2006 and thought it was one of our
very best. The four days of trekking and three nights of catered
camping were simply spectacular.

We explored several archaeological sites as we hiked to Machu Picchu.
Each day we were rewarded with hot soup and a sumptuous lunch and hot
tea was awaiting as we arrived in camp. We awoke on the final morning
at 12,000 feet as the clouds dissipated, revealing incredible views of
the awesome icefields of sacred Salcantay (20,574'), the area's
loftiest peak, and of the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley 4,000
feet below.

The lodging on this trip is superb--from the charm of the inner
courtyard at Casa Andina in Cusco to the beauty of the flower and
orchid gardens at our lodges in the Sacred Valley and at the Machu
Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

It's also a colorful and cultural experience--handicraft and clothing
markets, llamas and alpacas on the streets, festivals and parades
along our route, and Andean entertainment at our farewell dinner.

We have a 9-day program which includes the 4-day trek on the Inca
Trail. Or if camping isn't your thing, you might want to check out the
6-day option with just one day on the Inca Trail required to reach
Machu Picchu.

Don't miss out--start planning now and reserve your space before the
Inca Trail allocation fills.

See the detailed itinerary for the Peru Machu Picchu Multi-Sport or Hiker:

9-Day Tours (Inns and Porter-Supported Camping):

April 26-May 4
May 4-12--only 8 spots left
May 17-25--FULL
May 31-June 8 (singles)--only 8 spots left
June 21-29--only one spot left
July 12-20--13 spots left
July 26-August 3 (singles)--13 spots left
August 9-17
August 30-September 7
September 20-28
October 4-12 (singles)
October 18-26

6-Day Tour (Inns only) Start on the Same Days as Above

Grand Canyon Tours

The World Outdoors now has five different itineraries to experience
the grandeur and wonder of the Grand Canyon.

Our Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim Hiker was first introduced in 2003 and
every tour since has run at full capacity. Only one space remains for
this year's trip in late August/early September. Call today if you'd
like to join.

We have five departures scheduled for our always popular Grand Canyon
Classic Hiker --May 11, June 1, September 7, September 21 and October
12.

New in 2008 is the Grand Canyon-Colorado River-Havasu Falls Hiker.
This tour combines the best of the two trips above--a stay at Phantom
Ranch near the Colorado River in the Inner Canyon and a visit to the
Shangri-la settings of Havasu and Mooney Falls. The April 27th
departure has just two spots left and we've opened two departures in
November when the weather is cooler but the pools are still swimmable.

Finally, we have two programs that combine the Canyon's North Rim with
the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon and the towering sandstone monoliths of
Zion in southern Utah. Consider our epic Grand Canyon-Bryce-Zion Hiker
(8 departures from May thru October) or our Grand Canyon-Bryce-Zion
Multi-Sport, where we combine hiking and mountain biking with the
fast-growing sport of canyoneering (5 departures from May thru
September).
