APRIL 2015

Hello Zachary:

We’re quickly into the second quarter of 2015. It’s as if winter didn’t even happen. And if you ask all the skiers in our Seattle office, they’d say the same thing. Since our last newsletter in February, we’ve been very busy with some big projects that help to reinforce our commitment to cybersecurity.

If you’ve visited our website recently, you may have noticed a major redesign of the front-end of the site. It was a big effort to split out the product information from the tools, to allow both sides of the site to grow and better serve everyone. It also allows us to provide more resources to the cybersecurity community, recent examples of which are our OSINT webinar and SIEM white paper.

Speaking of new resources, we’ve been hard at work on The DomainTools Report, where we identified some interesting cybercrime domain registration patterns. To get an advance copy, come visit us at one of our 3 industry events this quarter (RSA Conference, FS-ISAC Summit, and Gartner Security Summit).

Sincerely,
DomainTools

Accelerate Cybercrime Investigations with OSINT

SANS analyst Lenny Zeltser joins Tim Helming of DomainTools in hosting a discussion of new ways to investigate cybercrime threat actors using OSINT (Open Source Threat Intelligence). The discussion includes examples from high-profile cases (such as APT1 or APT28) demonstrating how threat actors can be identified, and their connected holdings can be mapped for cybersecurity.

We’ve also been hard at work on The DomainTools Report, where we investigate the attributes of malicious domains connected to malware, spam, phishing, and botnets. If you’re attending RSA, come by our booth for a copy of the report.

Looking Back To Look Forward
Part 1 - Attribution: Looking Back to Look Forward

Attribution really comes into its own as a way of understanding the enemy–its methods, its aims, its habits. And the portrait of the threat actor is invaluable in every phase of security, from planning to defending to monitoring to responding. We examine how and why this is true, in Part 1 of this blog post. Read More

White Paper: Supercharge Your SIEM

SIEM tools have become indispensable for the modern enterprise. But even the best SIEM tool falls short when it comes to situational awareness of key “outside the firewall” aspects of an attack. Augmenting SIEM tools with detailed domain and IP address information enhances situational awareness and enables strong forensics and proactive security.
