| | The Allegheny Front Trail and Rock Run Trails Encircling the Black Moshannon State Park is the Allegheny Front Trail, or the AFT as it is commonly called; a relatively new addition to the trails of Pennsylvania. The AFT is 40 miles in length and offers opportunities for overnight backpacking trips as well as day hikes. In the northeast section of the trail, the AFT shares the trail with another group of trails commonly known as the Rock Run Trails. The Rock Run trail system is made up of five shorter trails; the Headwaters Trail, the the Ridge Trail, the Valley Trail, the Woodland Trail, and the Entrance Trail. The AFT merges with the Rock Run trail system following a short section of the Ridge Trail and all of the Headwaters Trail and Entrance Trail. Located in Rothrock State Forest, Bear Meadows is one of the largest fresh water bogs in the east. Unlike the bogs of Canada, the bog at Bear Meadows was not touched by the glaciers of the last ice age supporting a variety of plants over the past 10,000 years. Bear Meadows is a great place to explore and the Bear Meadows Trail that loops around the bog is a great place to start. However, this hike was a slight variation of the typical Bear Meadows hike as we explored some of the trails and ridgelines to the northeast of Bear Meadows. Popularly known as the “Polatnick Tract,” the heavily forested acreage in Westfall Township harbors a multitude of game and other wildlife, and had been described as the largest, un-fragmented parcel of private, open land contiguous to the Delaware State Forest. A total of 422 miles of newly opened roads will be available to archery hunters in state forestlands. By opening normally locked gates, the Bureau of Forestry hopes to improve accessibility while promoting hunting in often remote areas where hunting pressure is needed to benefit forest regeneration. The opening of these roads also benefits non-hunters as well. Hikers get access to areas that can't typically be day-hiked. If you venture out in the woods in your vehicle, you'll be able to explore areas of the woods that are typically inaccessible. The SATC volunteers contribute well over a thousand hours each year toward the care and preservation of this and other footpaths in Central Pennsylvania. SATC offers an extensive schedule of activities. Their hikes and trail care outings are open to everyone, membership is not required. Join the SATC in exploring the local footpaths as well as seeing what they have done, and are doing, to preserve the local landscapes around Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
