Enjoying Eddy Lick Run on the CKT

Located in Centre and Clinton counties, the Chuck Keiper Trail is a great trail for those hikers looking for a challenge and solitude. The trail is over 50 miles in length, but thanks to a cross-connector trail, it is split into two, shorter loops. Not only are their options for shorter backpacking trips, there are plenty of opportunities for day hikes. The Yost Run Loop is a very popular hike on a portion of the Chuck Keiper Trail. Another option that I discovered this weekend is a circuit hike that follows Eddy Lick Run.

Views, Heat, and Steep Trails in Rothrock State Forest

Starting in Galbraith Gap, you'll find many trails that lead you deep into Rothrock State Forest. Some trails follow the hollows and valleys into the unique folds of the mountains, while others tackle the mountains head on.

This hike took us to the top of Tussey Mountain and Little Flat. After a 1000 foot elevation gain and a short detour on the Mid State Trail, you get to take in one of the many vistas found along the MST as it makes it way from Little Flat to Big Flat.

Once the views are taken in and the decision is made to head back the trailhead, the Spruce Gap Trail will get you there the fastest. The Spruce Gap Trail proves that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, even when that straight line is straight down a mountain side.

Pennsylvania Hiking Week May 23rd - 31st

DCNR has teamed with the Keystone Trails Association (KTA) to offer nearly 100 organized hikes and walks available throughout Pennsylvania during the nine-day event that runs from Saturday, May 23 through Sunday, May 31.

All of the scheduled hikes have leaders. Most hikes are on the two weekends of the event, but several weekday and evening hikes also are offered. Special hikes include night hikes; wildflower walks; hikes for people with disabilities; pet walks; geology walks and much more.

Most hikes will take place in state parks and state forests, with some hikes scheduled on the Appalachian Trail, in Allegheny National Forest, and in city and community parks. Visit the Pennsylvania DCNR website to see a listing of all the hikes currently scheduled.

National Trails Day June 6th

American Hiking Society's signature trail awareness program, National Trails Day (NTD), inspires the public and trail enthusiasts nationwide to seek out their favorite trails to discover, learn about, and celebrate trails while participating in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops and trail work projects.

NTD also provides an opportunity to thank volunteers, land managing agencies, and outdoor-minded businesses for their support in developing and maintaining trails. Visit the American Hiking Society's website to see what events are planned near you.

Hiking Tip: Keep an Eye Open for Ticks

Every spring there seems to be an over abundance of ticks in the woods. Here in Pennsylvania this can pose a health risk to hikers as deer ticks are known to carry and transmit Lyme disease. Not every tick that you'll encounter in the woods is a deer tick, but it is always better to err on the side of caution. Here are some tips to limit your exposure to ticks while hiking:
  • Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts: tuck your pants into your socks for additional protection.
  • Wear light colored clothing to make it easier to spot ticks.
  • Spray DEET of 25% concentration or more on clothing, heavily on your boots, and sparingly on exposed skin.
  • Try to hike in the middle of the trail and avoid brushing up against vegetation where possible.
  • Finally, inspect yourself thoroughly when you get home: best done during a shower.
Hiking on the Web - SlackPacker.com

Slackpacker.com is designed to provide convenient access to websites with hiking and backpacking trail maps, trip reports, and photographs. It is not intended to compete with other hiking-oriented sites, rather to provide quick, organized access to those other sites. In addition, thousands of personal sites have been posted on free web servers -- only to be ignored by search engines. The purpose of slackpacker.com is to provide a way to find these pages, and make research easier for the hiker.

Deal of the Month - Insect Repellents

Warmer weather and the return of spring also marks the return of insects. Black flies and gnats are bothersome while hiking. However, ticks and mosquitoes pose a real health risk, with the possibilities of contracting Lyme disease or the West Nile Virus.

Insect repellents are strongly recommended when hiking in tick infested areas or around marshes and standing water where mosquitoes can be found. To help protect you this spring we are offering 10% off Insect Repellents for the Deal of the Month.

To receive your 10% discount off of any insect repellent at The Hiking Spot, simply use coupon code BUGOFF09. You'll have the opportunity to enter your coupon code during the checkout process. This offer expires May 31st, 2009.

Only one coupon/coupon code per order. Some coupons can only be used once. Other restrictions may apply. This exclusive Deal of the Month offer is only valid for "Go Take A Hike" e-Newsletter subscribers.
