AdSense Newsletter: Happy Holidays

Google AdSense™

Google AdSense logo

Hi Zachary Modis,

We at Google AdSense wanted to wish all our publishers happy holidays and share the exciting news about some product developments in AdSense for search. In this newsletter, you'll learn about the Custom Search Element, the new Product Ideas page, and how you can stay connected with us on Twitter and Facebook!

Sincerely,

The Google AdSense Team

Introducing the Custom Search Element

Earlier this year, we introduced Google Web Elements, which lets you add richness and interactivity to your site by copying and pasting a snippet of code onto your page. Now, we'd like to tell you more specifically about the Custom Search Element, a new way to integrate custom search on your pages. It builds upon the customization features and revenue opportunity of the Custom Search Engine, and integrates much more smoothly with the look and feel of your site. With features such as an inline search experience, complete customization, and an interactive result set, we think it will have a positive impact on your AdSense earnings.

If you don't have a search engine on your site, you can always sign in to your AdSense account, navigate to the AdSense Setup tab and click on the AdSense for search product to set it up, after which you can create a Custom Search Element. The Custom Search Element can be designed to search your own site, or use your existing search engine to search across multiple sites of your choice.

Submit your suggestions to the Product Ideas for AdSense page

What's on your AdSense wishlist for 2010? Whether you have an idea for a new AdSense feature or a suggestion to improve the product, we invite you to submit your ideas to our recently launched Product Ideas for AdSense page. You can also look through the ideas submitted by other publishers and vote on the ones you like.

While we aren't able to guarantee that all the ideas will be implemented, we can guarantee that we'll take the most popular ideas to the AdSense Product Management team for review. By submitting an idea, you agree that Google may use the idea to develop and enhance Google's products and services.

Don't wait too long to submit your ideas and votes -- the Product Ideas page will be live until Tuesday, December 15th. We look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Tygart Lake Trails in West Virginia

Even though most of the hikes I do are within the Pennsylvania state borders, I do get a chance to hike on trails outside the state. Recently I visited my daughter attending college at West Virginia University. During my visit there we stayed at Tygart Lake State Park. While the kids decided to take an afternoon siesta I opted for exploring and hiking some of the trails in the park.

Trexler Nature Preserve Now Open

The Trexler Nature Preserve in Lehigh County opened this fall, giving residents and visitors the chance to explore the improved trails, fishing areas and natural landscape. The 1,108 acre preserve, which contains the 29-acre Lehigh Valley Zoo, was deeded to Lehigh County as a public park by businessman General Harry Trexler in 1935. At that time it was home to bison, elk and Virginia deer. A recent upgrade expanded the trail system, making hiking, biking and horseback riding easier and more enjoyable throughout the 1,108 acre campus.

Hiking on the Web - Susquehannock Trail Club

The Mid State Trail and a Place Called Hairy John

About 2 years ago I ventured into Woodward Gap to explore the trails and do a hike on the Mid State Trail. This was in December, and with snow and ice on the ground, that hike was cut short and I promised to come back at a later date to continue my exploring. On a relatively mild, late October day, I managed to get back to Woodward Gap to visit a section of the Mid State Trail. Read all about this latest hike on the Mid State Trail and learn about a place called Hairy John at PAHikes.com.

Exploring the Trails of Shingletown Gap

Looking to take advantage of after-work daylight before we turned the clocks back, Tim and I decided to do a hike in the Shingletown Gap area. This would be our last after-work hike of the season and we wanted to do something close by so that we had enough time to put in a little bit of mileage. I suggested this particular hike, which I had done over 2 years ago, as it explored trails that Tim had not yet hiked.

Be Sure to Hike With a Properly Fit Backpack

I have learned through experience that a properly fit backpack makes a world of difference when you are hiking. A pack that is too short for your torso, or a waist belt that is too loose will cause undo fatigue and in some cases chafing on your shoulders or hips. Here are a couple things to keep in mind before heading out on your next overnight expedition.
  • Make sure the pack is properly adjusted to your body size. You will want to make sure the pack matches your torso length.
  • Pack light items, such as sleeping bags and clothes, towards the bottom of the pack, with heavier items such as the tent higher and closer to your body.
  • Keep the waist belt tight. If it becomes too loose during a backpacking trip, use a piece of clothing to fill the gap. Readjust the tightness of the belt often.
  • When putting on your pack, first tighten the hip belt while leaning slightly forward. Then stand-up straight and snug up the shoulder straps. To reduce the swaying of the pack, you may have to adjust the load-lifters and hip stabilizers. Finally, make sure the shoulder straps aren’t so tight that you can’t shrug your shoulders.
Hiking on the Web - DCNR's ExplorePATrails.com

On the site, you can find information about hiking; biking; canoe; state park and state forest; rail-trails; cross country ski; equestrian; snowmobile and ATV trails and more.

The Allegheny Front Trail and Rock Run Trails

Encircling the Black Moshannon State Park is the Allegheny Front Trail, or the AFT as it is commonly called; a relatively new addition to the trails of Pennsylvania. The AFT is 40 miles in length and offers opportunities for overnight backpacking trips as well as day hikes. In the northeast section of the trail, the AFT shares the trail with another group of trails commonly known as the Rock Run Trails. The Rock Run trail system is made up of five shorter trails; the Headwaters Trail, the the Ridge Trail, the Valley Trail, the Woodland Trail, and the Entrance Trail. The AFT merges with the Rock Run trail system following a short section of the Ridge Trail and all of the Headwaters Trail and Entrance Trail.

Bear Meadows Variation Hike

Bear Meadows was designated a natural area in 1966. Located in Rothrock State Forest, Bear Meadows is one of the largest fresh water bogs in the east. Unlike the bogs of Canada, the bog at Bear Meadows was not touched by the glaciers of the last ice age supporting a variety of plants over the past 10,000 years. Bear Meadows is a great place to explore and the Bear Meadows Trail that loops around the bog is a great place to start. However, this hike was a slight variation of the typical Bear Meadows hike as we explored some of the trails and ridgelines to the northeast of Bear Meadows.

DCNR Acquires 708-acre-tract for Addition to Delaware State Forest

DCNR Deputy Secretary Cindy Dunn on Monday joined Pike County civic and regional conservation leaders in applauding acquisition of a 708-acre tract that expands the Delaware State Forest to more than 84,000 acres.

“This invaluable addition to the state forest system comes at a time when more and more people in the northeastern section of the state are being drawn to these woodlands by a variety of interests and activities,” Dunn said, speaking at a “Gala on the Green” dedication ceremony hosted by Pike County officials.

Popularly known as the “Polatnick Tract,” the heavily forested acreage in Westfall Township harbors a multitude of game and other wildlife, and had been described as the largest, un-fragmented parcel of private, open land contiguous to the Delaware State Forest.

Additional State Forest Roads Open for Deer Season

Deer hunters heading into Pennsylvania’s woodlands Saturday, Oct. 3, for the start of archery season across most of the state will find additional roads open in 17 of the 20 state forest districts. A total of 422 miles of newly opened roads will be available to archery hunters in state forestlands. By opening normally locked gates, the Bureau of Forestry hopes to improve accessibility while promoting hunting in often remote areas where hunting pressure is needed to benefit forest regeneration. The opening of these roads also benefits non-hunters as well. Hikers get access to areas that can't typically be day-hiked. If you venture out in the woods in your vehicle, you'll be able to explore areas of the woods that are typically inaccessible.

Hiking on the Web - Susquehanna Appalachian Trail Club

The Susquehanna Appalachian Trail Club is one of the thirty groups that maintain part of the Appalachian Trail, a footpath following the crest of the Appalachian Mountains for 2,175 miles from Maine to Georgia. The SATC volunteers contribute well over a thousand hours each year toward the care and preservation of this and other footpaths in Central Pennsylvania.

SATC offers an extensive schedule of activities. Their hikes and trail care outings are open to everyone, membership is not required. Join the SATC in exploring the local footpaths as well as seeing what they have done, and are doing, to preserve the local landscapes around Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
