Hiking the MST from Poe Paddy to Woodward Gap

As the Mid State Trail descends from Long Mountain it passes through Poe Paddy State Park. Hiking along the trail for another half mile and you will cross Penns Creek on an old train trestle and immediately after that you'll pass through the only tunnel found on any hiking trail in Pennsylvania. After passing through the tunnel you'll follow the Penn Central Railroad grade as it follows the banks of Penns Creek. All of this was experienced within the first mile of our latest hike on the Mid State Trail. Looking to put more of the Mid State Trail under our belt, Tim and I took some time off work to do our next hike of eight plus miles from Poe Paddy State Park to Woodward Gap.

DCNR Adds Over 1100 Acres to the Lackawanna State Forest

DCNR officials are applauding the acquisition of a 1,175-acre-tract in Monroe and Lackawanna counties that expands the Lackawanna State Forest District to over 27,500 acres.

Now known as the “Blue Ridge Lehigh Tract,” the parcel acquired by DCNR’s Bureau of Forestry is in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County, and Thornhurst Township, Lackawanna County.

DCNR purchased the property through a partnership of The Conservation Fund, The Nature Conservancy, Wildlands Conservancy, Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC), Monroe County, Lackawanna County and others. The tract is largely forest acreage and includes approximately 2.5 miles of frontage on the Lehigh River.

Hiking on the Web - New York/New Jersey Trail Conference

Since 1920, New York/New Jersey Trail Conference has partnered with government and private landowners to create, protect, and maintain a network of 1,700 miles of hiking trails in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan region. The Trail Conference is a volunteer driven not-for-profit organization with a membership of 10,000 individuals and more than 100 clubs. The NYNJTC website is a great place to research your next hike in the New Jersey or New York area.

KTA Presents the Susquehanna Super Hike

On September 12, 2009, the Keystone Trails Association is sponsoring the Susquehanna Super Hike, a 25-mile hiking/trail runner challenge event for adventurous hikers and trail runners on the scenic rolling river hills of the lower Susquehanna Gorge.

This daunting hike and trail run on the Mason-Dixon and Conestoga Trails alternates breathtaking vistas with steep descents into dark, scenic hollows followed by strenuous climbs to the next vista. Prepare yourself for the steep hills, rocky terrain and deep ravines of the Susquehanna Super Hike, an arduous, undulating and challenging course.

The event course will traverse both sides of the Susquehanna River in York and Lancaster Counties. The Super Hike will begin at the York Hiking Club clubhouse just north of the Otter Creek Campground on Rt. 425 in York County and mostly follows the Mason-Dixon Trail south to the Norman Wood Bridge. From there it connects with the Conestoga Trail, crossing the bridge and continuing north while paralleling the Susquehanna River. It finally finishes at the Pequea Creek Campground, one mile east of the village of Pequea in Lancaster County.

Deal of the Month - Hennessy Hammocks

Hennessy Hammocks are the cream-of-the-crop when it comes to outdoor hammocks. Rugged in design and manufactured with the backpacker in mind, these hammocks are light weight and set up in a matter of minutes.

I own a Hennessy Expedition Hammock and have used it on various hikes. I highly recommend it over the use of a single person tent. I've posted a full review of this hammock at PAHikes.com and at The Hiking Spot. For a limited time, you can get $5.00 off either the purchase of a Hennessy Expedition or Hennessy Explorer Hammock. Just use coupon code GTAH0809 during check out to receive the discounted price. Offer expires September 30, 2009.

Only one coupon/coupon code per order. Some coupons can only be used once. Other restrictions may apply. This exclusive Deal of the Month offer is only valid for "Go Take A Hike" e-Newsletter subscribers.

AdSense August 2009 Newsletter

Google AdSense

Dear AdSense Publisher,

In this newsletter, we're excited to let you know what's new with AdSense:

  • Category filtering now available in many English-speaking countries
  • Take part in an AdSense email interview (get a $50 AdWords credit!)
  • Official AdSense Facebook Fan Page

Sincerely,

The Google AdSense Team

Category Filtering for English-Speaking Countries

Category filtering is now available in many English-speaking countries including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and India. Category filtering lets you prevent ads from up to 5 specific categories such as religion, politics, and dating from appearing on your pages. Your filters will be applied to ads in English, no matter how they're targeted. In addition, you'll be able to see the percentage that each category contributes to your earnings, which can help you understand any revenue impact you might notice as a result of filtering. Read more details on the Inside AdSense blog.

AdSense Email Interviews

To help us better understand what's most important to our publishers, we've recently started conducting email interviews. Interviews are currently available only to publishers located in North America, but we are aiming to expand this program to other countries in the future.

If you're located in North America, you can sign up for a chance to participate in an email interview and openly discuss your opinions about AdSense with a market researcher. Participants will receive a $50 AdWords credit for their time.

If you're interested, fill out this form to let us know. We'll be contacting chosen participants via email; please note that because space is limited, we won't be able to accept all applications.

Interested in participating in more research opportunities like this in the future? Select "Google market research" in your email preferences. Simply sign in and visit the Contact Preferences page under your My Account tab.

Official AdSense Facebook Fan Page

You expressed your interest in Facebook through the creation of a number of AdSense groups, and we listened. We're pleased to announce that the official AdSense Facebook Fan Page is now up and running! Our Facebook Fan page is a one-stop shop for up-to-date information and will be synced with the Inside AdSense blog, the @AdSense Twitter feed and our YouTube page.
