The Bubbles and Eagle Lake at Acadia National Park

Located on Mount Desert Island in Maine is Acadia National Park, the first national park east of the Mississippi River. Located within the park are over 125 miles of hiking trails. During June of 2009, I vacationed here and got an opportunity to explore some of these trails. We had done three hikes previous to this one. Two were ascents to the top of two of the mountains on the island, Champlain Mountain and Dorr Mountain. Our third was a leisurely stroll along the shoreline on Ocean Path. This latest outing, and the last during our vacation, was an exploration of two small hills called "The Bubbles". There were six of us on this hike as we explored the tops of "The Bubbles" as well as the shoreline of Eagle Lake.

Exploring the Trails in Stone Valley

The Stone Valley Recreation Area is located within a 7000 acre experimental forest owned by the Pennsylvania State University. The recreation center itself includes a 72-acre lake, a resident camp facility, a day use recreation site, the Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, and more than 700 acres of varied eco-systems. Included on this recreation area are over 25 miles of trails suitable for hiking, snow-shoeing, and cross country skiing.

My intentions were to hike the Lake Trail at the Stone Valley Recreation Area. However, upon my arrival, I soon discovered that Lake Perez had been drained. Where there was once a lake now stood a large meadow. It seems that they were in the process of repairing the dam and that the lake would be empty for a couple years yet. The hike on the Lake Trail lost its appeal since there wasn't a lake to hike around. After a quick glance at one of the maps posted near the trailhead, I decided I would hike the Mountain View Trail instead.

Tussey Mountain Trail After the Fire

Back in 2006 there a was forest fire in Rothrock State Forest. The fire burned up the south face of Tussey Mountain and then spread to the north face. Running across the top of the mountain was the Tussey Mountain Trail which I had snow-shoed just that previous winter, but now was obliterated by the fire. The trail was reopened in the fall of 2006 and I had never been back to see how the trail and the forest were recovering. An urge to revisit the area overcame me during the second week of July, so three years later I decided to hike the Tussey Mountain Trail to see the burn area.

KTA Presents the Susquehanna Super Hike

On September 12, 2009, the Keystone Trails Association is sponsoring the Susquehanna Super Hike, a 25-mile hiking/trail runner challenge event for adventurous hikers and trail runners on the scenic rolling river hills of the lower Susquehanna Gorge.

This daunting hike and trail run on the Mason-Dixon and Conestoga Trails alternates breathtaking vistas with steep descents into dark, scenic hollows followed by strenuous climbs to the next vista. Prepare yourself for the steep hills, rocky terrain and deep ravines of the Susquehanna Super Hike, an arduous, undulating and challenging course.

The event course will traverse both sides of the Susquehanna River in York and Lancaster Counties. The Super Hike will begin at the York Hiking Club clubhouse just north of the Otter Creek Campground on Rt. 425 in York County and mostly follows the Mason-Dixon Trail south to the Norman Wood Bridge. From there it connects with the Conestoga Trail, crossing the bridge and continuing north while paralleling the Susquehanna River. It finally finishes at the Pequea Creek Campground, one mile east of the village of Pequea in Lancaster County.
