Exploring the Indian Steps

Branching off of the Mid State Trail near PA Furnace Road, passing through the Stone Valley Recreation Area, and reconnecting with the MST near the Beaver Pond on Shaver's Creek is the blue-blazed Ironstone Trail. At the start of the trail is a section known as the Indian Steps. Probably not built by indians, these steps made of stone climb up the south face of Tussey Mountain. Having hiked in the area for over four years, I had not to date ventured onto the Indian Steps. This all changed with our latest after-work hike outing.

On the Trails in Acadia National Park - Mount Champlain

Located on Mount Desert Island in Maine is Acadia National Park, the first national park east of the Mississippi River. Located within the park are over 125 miles of hiking trails. During June of 2009, Shari and I vacationed here and got an opportunity to explore some of these trails. The first trails explored was a circuit hike that included a climb to the top of Mount Champlain.

Mount Champlain is the eastern-most mountain on the island with an elevation of 1058 feet. I did this hike on our first full day on the island. I figured the total hike to be somewhere around five to six miles. I felt comfortable doing this hike as the elevation change and distance that I would be hiking was quite similar to the day hikes that I typically do in Pennsylvania.

The Tarn, The Gorge, and Dorr Mountain in Acadia N.P.

Located on Mount Desert Island in Maine is Acadia National Park, the first national park east of the Mississippi River. Located within the park are over 125 miles of hiking trails. During June of 2009, Shari and I vacationed here and got an opportunity to explore some of these trails. Our first exploration of the trails here took us to the top of Champlain Mountain. This hike had us exploring the Tarn, hiking through the Gorge, and climbing to the top of Dorr Mountain.

Dorr Mountain is the third tallest mountain on the island with an elevation of 1270 feet. The weather for this hike was awesome, with blue skies, and only a few puffy, cumulus clouds dotting the sky. The length of this hike was going to be a little under 5 miles.

The Mid State Trail Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Mid State Trail. To commemorate this event, the Mid State Trail Association is sponsoring a party in honor of the trail. All are invited to join the MSTA for this mixer and to share your experiences on Pennsylvania's wildest footpath.

The 40th Anniversary party for the Mid State Trail will be held on Sunday, July 12th, 2009 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. The party will be held at the Elk Creek Café + Aleworks located in downtown Millheim, PA. Mark your calendars and prepare to join in the celebrations. Good times and memories will be shared with all. You'll also be one of the first to try the new Mid State Trail Ale.
Keystone Trails Association 6th Annual "Prowl The Sproul"

The Keystone Trails Association will host the 6th annual Prowl the Sproul hiking weekend from July 17 to July 19, 2009.

The Sproul State Forest contains some of the most rugged and remote forestland in Pennsylvania. It is also home to two lengthy and beautiful hiking trails, the Chuck Keiper Trail (50-mile double loop) and the Donut Hole Trail (52-mile trail that connects with the Susquehannock Trail).

Guided hikes are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday to lead hikers off the beaten path to some of the hidden jewels of the Sproul State Forest. Many new hikes will be included for Prowl the Sproul VI. Explore new and exciting parts of the Sproul, as several hikes are only accessible when hiking with a DCNR guide.
