Hiking On Penns Creek's Old Railroad Bed

Penns Creek, located in Central Pennsylvania, is renowned for its awesome trout fishing. Beginning in the town of Coburn, Penns Creek flows through multiple gaps in the nearby mountains, flowing past Poe Paddy State Park, and emerging in Buffalo Valley.

Taking advantage of the natural geography created by Penns Creek, the early railroads placed a rail line on its banks. These rail lines were abandoned in the early 1900's, absorbed back into the agricultural lands, being destroyed and turned into fertile fields. However, the section of rail line that followed Penns Creek through the mountains still exists, or at least the rail bed still remains in tact. This remaining section of rail bed, from Coburn to Poe Paddy State Park, was the destination for this hike.

Optimus Nova Stove Gear Review

The Optimus Nova Stove is a multi-fuel stove that weighs less than a pound. This stove has received many awards and has proven itself in the field for many hikers and backpackers alike.

I've owned the stove for about two years and have used it about a dozen times. It has performed well in snow, wind, and in temperatures as low as 10 degrees fahrenheit. The stove is a multi-fuel stove, able to burn white gas, kerosene, or diesel, but I've only used white gas with it.

The stove folds up to about the size of the fuel canister. It comes with tools for field maintenance, a wind screen, as well as a large carrier pouch to hold the stove and all accessories. The stove easily fits inside my MSR pots so it doesn't take up any additional space in my pack.
