Mount Nittany: Always a Great Place to Hike

Mount Nittany is a great place to hike: a steep climb at the start gets the blood pumping early, and puts the hardest part behind you early on in the hike. Once you are on top there are a number of trails of varying length. You are sure to find one that has the mileage you feel comfortable doing. Regardless of what trail you take once you’re on top, you are sure to be greeted by one, or many, of the amazing views of State College and Happy Valley. Read all about the latest hike and see for yourself how beautiful the views are from atop the mountain.

Fog on the Laurel Highlands Trail

The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail extends seventy miles from Ohiopyle State Park to Seward, just north of Johnstown. The trail traverses state parks, state forests, state game lands, other public lands and private lands. I've wanted to do an overnight backpacking trip on the Laurel Highlands Trail but never got around to coordinating a trip. So I figured I'd do the next best thing and do a day hike to see some of the great views into the Conemaugh Gorge found along the northern end of the trail.

When I woke up the morning of the hike I was disappointed to see so much fog. I knew the views I was looking forward to enjoying would be obscured. Undeterred I set off for the northern terminus of the trail located just south of Seward, PA. If I was lucky the fog would lift and at worse I got some much needed exercise.

Two Year Anniversary Give-Away: And the Winner Is....

Congratulations to Natalie H. from Phoenix, Arizona. She was the winner of our Two Year Anniversary Give-Away. She is now the proud owner of a Katadyn Hiker Water Filter and Nalgene Canteen.

The response for this contest was outstanding. Many thanks to all that signed up and participated. We are sure to have more contest, so keep an eye here and on the website for future announcements.
Two Hikers Receive the State Forest Trails Award

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources along with the Keystone Trails Association offer a State Forest Trails Award to any hiker that hikes 780 miles in Pennsylvania State Forest. The award recognizes anyone hiking all of Pennsylvania’s 18 state forest hiking trails, totaling 780 miles. There is no required sequence, direction, speed or length of time to complete the system.

This year two hikers received this award at the 2008 Fall meeting of the Keystone Trails Association. William S. Geiger of Allentown, Lehigh County, and John Potter of Montoursville, Lycoming County, were this year's recipients. They received a certificate, patch and ceremonial wooden walking stick for their accomplishments.

Your Vote Could Help PA Trails

iConservePA is conducting a month-long online mock election called Elect to Conserve where Pennsylvanians can select their favorite conservation cause to receive a cash prize. Five of iConservePA’s founding PA iCons – real people doing real conservation – have been chosen to be candidates in the statewide election each representing a conservation topic: trees and forests; open spaces and natural areas; water; native species and habitat; and trails and volunteerism. Each topic or "cause" is attached to a statewide Pennsylvania conservation organization that will be the beneficiary of the winning candidate. The winning candidate’s affiliated organization wins $5,000 from a private foundation to put toward a conservation project. A vote for Carl is a vote for PA Trails through the Keystone Trails Association. Help Carl and the trails of Pennsylvania win by casting your vote today.

Hiking & Backpacking Newsletter from BellaOnline.com

Hello, hello!

A month away in B.C. and Northern Idaho hiking, cycling and swimming, a week canoeing, scattered hiking days in between and an upcoming backpacking trip in Alberta's Kananaskis Country -- it's a good summer. The best part though, has been the unexpected discoveries such as the topic of this week's article:

Ogre Canyon
There's nothing hideous about this jewel tucked in the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies on the border of Jasper National Park.

I hope to hear from you sometime soon, either in the forum or in response to this email message.

Hiking & Backpacking Newsletter from BellaOnline.com

Hello, hello!

We're in the midst of searching for a new family member -- one with four paws and a happy tail -- which accounts for the focus of this week's (and last week's) article. Our last champion hiker, Buddy, was a great trail companion and we're hoping we'll find the same again. If you hike with a canine friend, or are thinking about doing so, you might want to invest in a set of packs, check it out!

Packs for Your Dog
Hiking with your best friend doesn't mean you have to carry all the gear. Read on for details on how to get your canine to join the pack!

Hi Guys

Not really a great deal to say this week, just that to remind you that we will still be running the sign up tomorrow for the summer trip. For those of you who may not have heard we are going to Torridon and the Isle of Skye in Scotland, which is fantastic hiking country with lots of scope to get into scrambling as well. Although there will be walks of all difficulties. We will be going on the 1st June and returning on the 8th, cost is £100 which includes transport, breakfast and evening meals and also accomodation.

So if you fancy coming along you please come to sign up tomorrow in the usual place (student resource lounge in the arc which is upstairs in the union) from 11.45 am until 1 pm.

If I don't see you before I wish you all the best in your exams.

Alex

newsletter 28/04/08

Once again welcome to the tomb of information which is the weekly LUUHC club email.

Thank you to all the members who came along on the Sunday trip to Langdale in the Lake District, once again the weather was less than perfect, but both groups who went out onto the hill had a great time, and one group even managed a very watery ascent of a fine grade one scramble on Pavey Arc.

Sunday Trip 4th May

Unfortunately due to a lack of interest, this weekend’s Wild Camp Trip to Cumbria has had to be cancelled. In its place we shall be running a regular Sunday hike to a mystery location, could it be the Dales? Could it be the Moors? The only way to find out is to come along to the sign-up session on Wednesday to find out more clues. Sign up session will be held in the Arc Resource Lounge in the union building between 1145 & 1300.

Wednesday night’s social will kick off in the Vic near Millennium square at the usual time of 2030, possibly heading to another destination, or possibly drinking the Vic dry….. Who knows?

LUUHC Summer Trip June 1st to June 8th

Finally sign up for the summer trip will start this Wednesday, for a measly cost of £100; you will be taken to the spectacular locations on the Scottish Highlands of Torridon and the Isle of Skye, which offer plenty of routes of all grades including some classic scrambles on some of the best Munroe’s in Scotland.

Staying in tents at two different campsites, with breakfast, evening meal and dessert provided each day. The summer trip will not be one to miss out on. We’re even planning a BBQ one evening with club competitions and a prize giving ceremony where we shall present such illustrious prizes as the LUUHC Wooden Spoon Award for Stupidity, and the LUUHC Kevlar Bootlace Award for the most hardcore member.

Club Hoodies

Last but not least the club hoodies have finally arrived, if you ordered one then please come along to the Wednesday sign-up session to collect yours. If you haven’t yet paid for it then please bring along £20 which will be payable before collecting your hoodie.

See you soon

Steve and Alex

Taking a Stroll Along the Black Moshannon

This was a perfect hike for an early spring evening. With only a few hours of daylight left in the day for hiking, we decided to do this flat hike on the Shingle Mill Trail in Black Moshannon State Park. Just a little under 4 miles in length, this hike gave us plenty of opportunities to see some beautiful areas along the Black Moshannon creek.

The Shingle Mill Trail is part of the cross connector of the Allegheny Front Trail. The trail is blazed blue and follows the western banks of the Black Moshannon creek. The Shingle Mill Trail connects the Black Moshannon State Park with the orange-blazed AFT. Our hike was only on the southern half of the Shingle Mill Trail, where we crossed the Black Mo on Huckleberry Road, and road walked back to the trailhead.

To the Top of Tussey Mountain in Shingletown Gap

The Ridge and Valley Outings Club is a local hiking club that organizes and leads hikes on local trails every week from April till October. Typically hikes are done on Tuesday evenings, but this hike was done on a Thursday evening. Being early in the year, and the fact that the hikes don't start till 6:00PM, this was a shorter hike so that we could finish before dark.

The hike was in the Shingletown Gap area. This is a very popular place for hikes because of the many trails and the close proximity to State College and is a favorite of mine as well. Last year I didn't do a single hike in Shingletown Gap and I didn't want to make the same mistake this year. When I heard that the RVOC was going to be doing a short but strenuous hike at Shingletown, I signed up for the outing.

The Fall of a Hiking Icon and BPA

When I stop for a short rest during my hikes I typically reach for my large mouthed Nalgene bottle. Nearly indestructible, this "friend" has been on almost every hike I've done, and has taken more tumbles on the trail than I have. Not only has this hiking staple carried water for quenching my thirst on strenuous hikes, but it has also carried other beverages as well as being a heater at the bottom of my sleeping bag during colder weather.

Recently it was discovered that the chemical monomer used to make these polycarbonate plastic bottles, the same chemical that imparts clarity, strength, and heat resistance, may be hazardous to our health. Bisphenol-A is a chemical monomer that reacts with itself to form long chains, or polymers. This polymer is polycarbonate plastic. During the manufacturing process of this plastic some of the unreacted BPA remains and can possibly leach out of the plastic at high temperatures.

It is because of this possible leaching, and the recently discovered fact that very low levels of BPA may pose a health risk, that Nalgene has decided to phase out production of these hiking icons. Soon you will no longer be able to purchase these indestructible carriers of water. The debate on the risks of BPA are far from over, but one thing seems certain, the wide-mouth Nalgene bottle may no longer be helping to quench my thirst during my hikes.

Hiking on the Web - Loyalsock Trail and the Alpine Club of Williamsport

Our hike on the web this month takes us to the website of the Loyalsock Trail and the Alpine Club of Williamsport.

The Alpine Club was formed in 1953 as a way of maintaining the newly formed Loyalsock Trail (LT). Today the club still maintains the LT through a series of work hikes in the spring, but also has monthly hikes in Northeastern and Northcentral Pennsylvania throughout the entire year.

The Loyalsock Trail (LT), is a footpath which begins on PA Route 87 and ends at the parking lot on Meade Road. Entrance to Meade Road is 2.4 miles north of the intersection of Routes 220 and 154 near Laporte. The LT follows mountain ridges and streams through the Loyalsock watershed as it travels through the woods on footpaths, old logging roads and abandoned railroad grades. It passes through parts of the Tiadaghton and Wyoming State Forests for most of it's 59.21 miles. The extremes of elevation are 665' to 2140'.

newsletter 15/04/08

Hello to everyone and a belated  Happy Easter, I hope you've all had a nice relaxing time over the Easter holidays and are raring to get back out into the hills with LUUHC.

The calendar for this part of the term is as follows:

Sunday 20th April: Day hike to the Yorkshire Dales with a possible excursion  to the  Tan Hill Inn which is Britain's highest pub at 1732ft in Swaledale

Wild Camp Weekend 26th, 27th & 28th of April: Wild Camping in the Lake District

Sunday or Saturday 3/4th May: Last day hike of the year to Langdale in the Lake District. We would be very greatful if you would tell us what you think to running a trip on a Saturday rather than a Sunday for some trips as it will enable us to access transport more easily and get to different locations. It would be great if you could send me a quick e-mail or chat to me or Steve at a social so we can find out what you think to this.

Sign up for Sunday the 20th and the Wild Camp Weekend will be held this Wednesday (16th April) between 1130 & 1300 in the Arc Resource Lounge which is upstairs in the union building.

Wild Camping Info: This is a great opportunity to get a taste of the real outdoors by spending an extended time high up on the fells of the beautiful Lake District. Multiday wild camping involves carrying all you need to live, eat and survive in your rucksack for the time that you are out on the hill. Sleeping in a small group of tents at remote locations and waking up already on the hill!

Routes of Moderate to Hard difficulty will be run on this weekend, with the moderate route spending one night in a valley campsite (with access to toilets and showers).

If you're interested in giving it a go please check out the required kit list on the LUUHC Club Forum or come along to the Wednesday Sign up session to find out more http://leedshike.co.uk/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=34&topic=274.0

For more information on wild camping check out the following website

http://v-g.me.uk/WildCamp/WildCamp.htm

Finally the Wednesday night social will be held at the usual place at the usual time, Queen Vic Hotel at 8.30pm, if you don’t know where that is but still want to come along then phone our social secretary Mr Tom on 07749983485, after a few drinks at the Vic we may move on to another suitable location for dancing/drinking/generic university club antics…… or we could stay in the Vic for more drinks, the choice is yours so come along and badger the Mr Tom.

If you haven’t been along to a social before or just haven’t been for a while then please pop along, it’s a great way to meet people and to catch up on club gossip and future events.

Talking of future events the annual club summer trip is nearly upon us, planning for this exciting event is already underway and the final destination will be revealed shortly…… It’s going to be exciting, it’s going to be big, and it’s definitely going to be worth while, so stay tuned to your email in-boxes and the club forum for further updates.

Lots of LUUHC Love from President Steve and Secretary Alex
